Dashcam Installation

Dash camera mounted on a car windscreen recording traffic ahead

Dashcam Installation Services in Calgary AB

A dashcam is only as good as the install. We hardwire dash cameras at our Northeast Calgary shop – no cable dangling from the cigarette lighter, no wires across your windscreen. Everything is tucked behind the trim and tested before you drive away.

  • Hardwired to the fuse box, cables hidden behind the trim
  • Parking mode wired properly, with battery protection
  • We fit your camera or ours
  • Lifetime warranty on the installation

What a proper dashcam install includes

  • Hardwiring to the fuse box. The camera runs off your vehicle’s power instead of occupying a 12V socket, so it turns on and off with the car.
  • Hidden cable routing. Cables are tucked behind the headliner, A-pillar and trim panels, so nothing is visible from the driver’s seat.
  • Parking mode set up correctly. Wired so the camera keeps watching while you are parked, with a voltage cut-off so it can never flatten your battery.
  • Rear and cabin cameras run properly. The rear cable is routed through the vehicle, not taped along the roofline.
  • Tested before you leave. We check recording, loop, impact lock and the app connection with you.

Single, dual or three-channel?

  • Single channel records the road ahead. The simplest option and the cheapest to fit.
  • Dual channel adds a rear camera – this is what most Calgary drivers choose, because a large share of collisions are rear-end.
  • Three channel adds an interior camera. The usual choice for rideshare and delivery drivers.

Not sure which you need? Tell us how you use the vehicle and we will tell you what is actually worth fitting.

Parking mode, and why it needs hardwiring

Parking mode is the feature most people want and the one most often installed badly. To record while the vehicle is off, the camera needs constant power – which means a proper hardwire kit with a low-voltage cut-off. Set up correctly, the camera stops drawing power before your battery drops too far to start the car.

A camera plugged into the 12V socket cannot do this on most vehicles. It shuts off with the ignition.

We fit your camera, or supply one

We keep FineVu cameras in stock, from single-channel units up to 4K cloud-connected models, and we will happily install a camera you already own. We regularly fit customer-supplied Thinkware, Viofo, Garmin and BlackVue units.

If you are buying, tell us your budget and how you park – street, garage or lot – and we will point you at the right model rather than the most expensive one.

Backup camera installation

Backup cameras are one of the jobs we do most, and after dash cams it is the work our customers mention most often. Older vehicles never came with one, and plenty of newer ones only got a camera on the higher trim.

There are two ways to do it, and which one suits you depends on the vehicle:

  • Into your factory screen – if your vehicle already has a display, we can usually feed the camera straight into it, so reverse looks and behaves the way the manufacturer intended. Nothing on the dash changes.
  • Into a new head unit – if there is no screen, or the factory one will not accept a camera feed, we fit a touchscreen that handles the camera and normally brings Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with it.

You have a choice on the camera itself. A licence-plate camera mounts on the plate bracket and is the quickest, tidiest option on most cars. A flush-mount camera is set into the bumper or tailgate trim and disappears almost completely, but it is more work and it is permanent. We will tell you honestly which one your vehicle suits.

Either way the camera is wired to switch on with reverse, so it comes up by itself when you select R and gets out of the way when you pull forward. Where the screen supports it, we turn on the guideline overlay.

We stock cameras, and we are happy to fit one you have already bought – tell us the model when you book so we can check it will talk to your screen.

Lifetime warranty on the installation

If anything we installed ever fails, bring it back and we’ll fix it – for as long as you own the vehicle. The camera itself carries its manufacturer’s warranty.

What happens on the day

  • Book a slot online or by phone.
  • Drop the vehicle off. We confirm the price before we start – dashcam installs are quoted per vehicle, because routing differs between a hatchback and a three-row SUV.
  • We install, hide the wiring and test it, then show you how to pull footage off it.

Open Monday to Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Closed Sundays.

Dashcam questions

How much does dashcam installation cost in Calgary?
We quote per vehicle, because cable routing differs a lot between models and because a rear camera adds work. Send us your year, make and model, or book a slot and we will confirm the price before starting.

Will a dashcam drain my battery?
Not when it is hardwired properly. We fit a low-voltage cut-off so the camera stops drawing power well before your battery gets too low to start the vehicle.

Does it record while the car is parked?
Yes, if you want it to. Parking mode needs constant power, which is why it has to be hardwired rather than plugged into the 12V socket.

Can you install a dashcam I bought myself?
Yes. We fit customer-supplied cameras regularly – Thinkware, Viofo, Garmin, BlackVue and others.

Will the wiring be visible?
No. Cables are routed behind the headliner and trim panels. From the driver’s seat you should only see the camera.

Do you install rear cameras too?
Yes, and we run the cable through the vehicle properly rather than taping it along the roofline.

Can you add a backup camera to a car that never had one?
Almost always, yes. If your vehicle has a factory screen we can usually feed the camera into it; if it does not, we fit a screen that handles the camera and brings Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with it. Send us the year, make and model and we will confirm what fits.
