Sound Upgrades

A sound upgrade is not one purchase, it is an order of operations. Done in the right sequence each step makes the next one work harder. Done in the wrong order you pay twice and wonder why it still does not sound like you hoped.

Here is the order we would do it in, and why.

Step one: quiet the car down

This is the step almost everyone skips, and it is the one that changes the most. A car door is a thin steel box with a speaker bolted into it. It rings, it rattles, and it lets road noise straight through. Sound deadening treats those panels so they stop behaving like a drum.

You get two things from it. The cabin gets quieter — less tyre roar on the Deerfoot, less drumming from the wheel wells, no more buzzing door cards. And your speakers get a sealed, solid enclosure to work in instead of a hollow tin box, which is why the same speakers sound markedly better afterwards.

Where it goes. Doors are the highest-value area by a distance and the one that changes how your audio sounds. Then the floor, which is the biggest source of road noise; the wheel wells, where slush and gravel come through; the trunk and rear quarters if you are running a subwoofer; the roof for rain and wind; and the firewall or hood for engine noise, mostly on trucks and diesels.

Most people do not need the whole car. Doors and floor get you the majority of the improvement for a fraction of a full teardown, and we will tell you where the money is best spent on your vehicle.

Materials. Three things do the work: butyl mats with an aluminium face stop panels resonating, closed-cell foam decouples panels so they cannot rattle against each other, and mass-loaded vinyl adds weight to block airborne noise. Most customers ask for it by brand — Dynamat is the name almost everyone knows, alongside Kilmat, Noico, HushMat and Siless. They are doing the same job at different price points. Tell us the budget and what you are trying to fix and we will match the material to it, or fit product you already bought.

An honest word. Sound deadening will not make your truck silent. Nothing will. It takes the edge off — the cabin gets calmer, you stop raising your voice on the highway, the rattles go. On a noisy vehicle that is a large, obvious change. On a car that was already quiet it is subtle, and we will say so before you spend the money rather than after.

Step two: speakers

With the doors treated, a decent set of speakers has something solid to push against. This is where most of the audible improvement comes from for most people, and for a lot of vehicles it is where the upgrade sensibly stops. Step three: an amplifier to drive them

Factory head units put out very little real power. Good speakers running on factory power will sound better than the originals, but they are not doing what they are capable of. An amplifier is what makes them open up — and it is the difference between a system that is louder and one that stays clean when you turn it up.

Step four: a subwoofer, if you want the bottom end

Door speakers cannot make low bass, no matter what you spend. If you want weight underneath the music you need a sub. We will size it to what you actually listen to and how much trunk space you are willing to give up — not everyone needs a 12.

Step five: DSP tuning

The last step, and the one people have usually never heard of. In a car you sit off to one side, inches from one speaker and feet from another. DSP tuning corrects the timing and balance so the sound stages properly from where you actually sit. It costs nothing in hardware on a system that already has a processor, and it is often the single biggest improvement to a system that already has good components in it.

The vehicles we do this on most

Trucks and Jeeps, overwhelmingly — loudest cabins, biggest gains. Ford F-150, RAM, Chevrolet Silverado, Toyota Tacoma and Tundra, 4Runner, Jeep Wrangler (JK and JL), Ford Bronco. Plenty of Subaru, RAV4, Civic and Teslas too, where owners are usually chasing quiet rather than volume.

Soft-top Wranglers and Broncos are a special case: there is a limit to what deadening can do when the roof is fabric, and we will be straight with you about that before you book.

What happens on the day

We agree what is being done and the price before we start. Trim comes off properly and goes back on properly — no broken clips, and no new rattles introduced by the job that was meant to remove them. Panels are cleaned, material is rolled down so it actually adheres, wiring is loomed and secured, and everything is reassembled and tested with you before you leave.

Lifetime warranty on the installation

If anything we installed ever fails, bring it back and we will fix it — for as long as you own the vehicle. Equipment carries its own manufacturer warranty.

Sound upgrade questions

Where should I start if I only do one thing?
Deaden the doors and fit decent speakers, in that order, in the same visit. That is the best value combination we sell.

How much does car sound deadening cost?
It depends on how much of the vehicle you want done. Doors only is a modest job; a full floor, roof and trunk teardown is a much bigger one. Tell us what is bothering you and we will quote it before any work starts.

Will sound deadening make my stereo sound better?
Yes, and more than most people expect. It is the cheapest real improvement you can make to a car audio system.

How much quieter will it be?
Noticeably, not silently. Doors and floor make the clearest difference.

Does it add much weight?
A sensible treatment adds some, but not an amount you will feel. Covering every square inch is mostly wasted material and we do not do it.

Can you use material or speakers I already bought?
